Playing Poker Aggressively
It’s generally accepted in playing poker that the best strategy is to play a tight, aggressive style. What does that mean? Basically, you play very few hands, but when you do play them, you play them strongly, taking the lead in hands with betting and putting pressure on your opponents to fold. This gives you your best chance to win, either by making the best hand, since you start with a better hand on average than your opponents, or by intimidating your opponents to fold.
Having the ability to play aggressively is an important attribute to have when it comes to poker, especially when playing Texas Holdem. However, it is vital that you are able to exercise a good aggressive style of play, as being aggressive does not mean simply betting and raising at every opportunity, thus the “tight” part of that formula.
So the best advice here is to bet and raise when you have an advantage over your opponents. This isn’t just when you have better cards but also if you have better position or are just matched up against weaker or more inexperienced players. Still, you must pick your spots wisely.
Many poker players think they have a tight aggressive style when they do not. Many who think they are tight are still playing more hands than they should. There is a difference between wild aggression and selective aggression. Just throwing chips into the pot at every opportunity will not get you the money. You have to sense when your opponents are weak or when you appear strong. If you are not selective with your aggression, opponents will not respect your bets and your strategy will be ineffective.
Your main objective is to be aggressive and bet enough to give your opponent the wrong odds to call to improve their hand, so that you can take the pot down on the flop. This is the much better play than being passive and calling, as you leave yourself open to being out-drawn on the turn. It can also save you from getting into messy situations in the middle of a hand.
You can also be aggressive to earn free cards. Oftentimes, opponents will be less inclined to bet mediocre hands for fear of being raised off of them, and they will sometimes check big hands to you in hopes of inducing a bluff. If your opponent checks to you because of your aggressive style, you have just earned a free card on the draw.
