Population Redistribution Possible After Internet Becomes Universal

According to Orange, the population distribution in the UK will soon change once the internet becomes a common facility to people all over the country. The emerging trends show that the existing workforce prefers living in less crowded areas if it is possible to work from there, which the internet is facilitating.

Orange created a population map based on its Connected Britain research done this year, which asked people whether they would like to live in rural areas or in cities once they can access internet everywhere. The study was carried out among a sample of more than 3,000 people.

The study suggests that population in Scotland and the South West will increase as people said they are interested in moving to these areas. On the other hand, it will go down in the North and the Midlands as people wish to migrate from these areas. This is because once mobile internet becomes easily available everywhere, people will be able to work from even remote areas and thus seem to prefer areas which are currently less populated.

According to Rober Ainger, director of corporate marketing at Orange, digital connectivity can change not only the population distribution structure but also the concept of work as known in Britain.
