From Elvis to Nick Drake, the music lives on.

Elvis Presley secured the number one, last week, in the historic 1000th compilation of the British charts, with A Fool Such As I ? 44 years since its original release. This is some achievement, but does his premature death have something to do with it? After all, a contemporary such as Jerry Lee Lewis, now well into pensionable age, doesn?t look likely to make a comeback at the top of present-day, mainstream play lists.

What?s at work here is that powerful emotion: nostalgia. Though Elvis was taken from us once the ravages of middle age were pretty much advanced, our collective memory of him remains frozen at an earlier, more flattering time. We all like to recall him as that vital, charismatic, leathered-up, turbo-charged macho of Jail House Rock. His early death has ensured his musical immortality and that he remains forever young in our hearts.

From Glenn Miller to Buddy Holly, an untimely death has endowed a certain mystique to the life and times of the performer, not to mention: bankability, qualities that endure from beyond the grave. Just take a look at the number of Glenn Miller compilations that are periodically released and the success that the musical ?Buddy? has had in recent times.

Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison left a vast, gaping void in the music landscape when they passed away, in the early 1970s.
However, their musical legacy has taken on cult status. The posthumous marketing of Hendrix material (from huge quantities of available, unreleased studio sessions and recordings of live concerts) exceeds that which he released in his lifetime ? and though much of it falls well below the sublime heights touched by: Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Leyland (recorded with his classic band, the Jimi Hendrix experience), it hasn?t deterred the buying public from continuing to buy into the Hendrix legend.

Jim Morrison (wayward rock-child, touched by the spirit of the Beat generation) with an exceptional talent for self-destruction, has been seen by many as a willing victim of rock and roll excess. His death in Paris in 1971, in his late 20s, and burial at Pere Lachaise cemetery (the resting place of the great and the good: from Edith Piaf to Oscar Wilde) have all added to the Morrison mythology, which has never lost its capacity to fascinate and sell records. Like Elvis, the image that survives is that of an arresting and unblemished youth, before excess took its toll.

Similarly, Marc Bolan?s music, which is both powerful and durable in its own right (consider: Midnight, Buick Mackane and Children of the Revolution), has had its longevity enhanced by his tragic end, in a car crash, at the age of 30.

Think of Eva Cassidy and Nick Drake, whose gentle, lyrical, profound and poignant songs evoke the memories of
two unique creative talents. Cassidy has bequeathed a profound artistic legacy. Her songs cover themes of love, loss, transcendence and redemption and are drawn from diverse musical traditions. ?Eva by Heart? will ensure her spirit lives on.

Finally, Nick Drake?s three albums (Five Leaves Left, Bryter Layter and Pink Moon), although acclaimed by critics and fellow musicians, failed to find a broad audience during his lifetime ? which served to nourish his extreme clinical depression. However, the growth in his posthumous popularity has established him as a significant figure in contemporary British popular music. A number of today?s musicians, including Badly Drawn Boy, Blur?s Graham Coxon and REM guitarist Peter Buck, cite him as an important influence.

I like Oprah with the best of them but I’m sorely disappointed in her interpretation of Zora Neale Hurston’s classic novel Their Eyes Were Watching God. I’m not sure if it was in interest of time, universal appeal or just a desire to focus on the love story of Tea Cake and Janie, but taking all of the racial elements out of the movie destroyed what is a beautiful love story and also made the movie’s narrative disjointed and rushed.

Hurston’s story, outside of being a coming of age story about a young black woman in the deep-south, is very much a story about the intra-racial issues that plague the black community at that time and while it is a shame to say, today. Many of the characters in the novel are only a generation or two removed from slavery and with that the color hierarchy that was created doing slave times was very much still in play for Janie and the other characters in the novel.

In the novel Tea Cake is a dark skinned man, something you wouldn’t know by choosing the very fair, blue eyed Michael Ealy to play this character. It is important that Tea Cake is dark because that was as much of a scandal for her community as was Tea Cake’s age. Tea Cake was the wrong kind of Negro for many reasons: he was poor, he was young and he was dark. The fair skinned, rich Ms. Janie shouldn’t be seen with such a man. Also his skin color comes into play when they make their way to the Everglades and Janie befriends a woman who has a deep hatred for dark skinned Negroes and goes out of her way to set Janie up with her fair skinned, more socially acceptable brother.

Some of the best moments in the book stem from the tension between the different hues of black people and when you take that out you’re left with a sweet but unoriginal love story, something Hurston’s groundbreaking work is not.

I must say that I expect more from Ms. Winfrey. This is the same woman who bought us Beloved, a very had tale about the horrors of slavery and how it affects the psyche of those who were enslaved. Instead of bringing to screen the richness and diverseness of Their Eyes Were Watching God, we get a watered down, socially acceptable version. I wanted more and I expected more and I’m very disappointed that I didn’t get it.

The customers of the Italy based internet service provider, Tiscali, face the imminent risk of their connections being cut off, unless the provider is able to reach a settlement with its creditors for the reduction of its debts.

The independent auditors, Ernst & Young, have warned that the future of Tiscali is in jeopardy, something that should serve as a cautionary sign to the customers. It stated that the provider would be able to carry on with its operations only if it can strike a good deal with its lenders and reduce its debt burden.

The company, however, is not willing to accept this view of the auditors, and keen to continue its business and arrest the loss of its customer base, it has contested the report prepared by them. It has however guaranteed that it intends to reduce its debts by means of a proposal, to be placed before a shareholder meeting scheduled to be held before May.
