Diabetic Meal Planning
As a diabetic you can eat almost anything you want and like but in smaller portions Diabetic meal planning is not difficult as long as you keep in mind that you can eat just about all of your favorite foods but in smaller amounts. I like to think of this as portion control. I am a type two diabetic and would like to share my diabetic meal planning system with you.
There was a time when I was terribly overweight and thought sugar free and fat free foods would help me lose weight. Instead the sugar free foods caused me to gain weight and because they were sugar free I thought I could eat more of them. Wrong! My big diabetic meal planning decision came when I tipped the scales at 250. I decided that grazing was the way to go. When you graze you each small portions of food all day.
My diabetic meal planning system works like this. I start with a good breakfast of an egg and toast or cereal. Sometime mid morning I have a piece of fruit for me preferably an apple. Lunchtime half a sandwich with half cup of soup or a small salad. Mid afternoon either a raw vegetable like a carrot or broccoli (my favorites) or three cookies and a cup of tea. Dinner has to be well balanced and that would consist of about four ounces of meat or fish, a baked or mashed potato, and a green vegetable (green beans my favorite) and for desert a very small scoop of ice cream or unsweetened fruit cocktail. . Another snack is in order before bed time and that is usually two graham crackers and a small glass of milk. I found that by having something before going to bed my sugar level is more stable and I get up feeling good. For me this is enough food for the day although you may need more. This type of diabetic meal planning depends on you and your individual system. By the way, after I learned to eat properly I have lost sixty three pounds in the last year. I feel as if I hit on something good and healthy and like to share it with others.
