Poker Superstitions
“Why are you still wearing those dirty socks from last week?!” For many poker players, superstition is a part of the game, no matter how irrational or unwarranted they might seem to others not in the poker community. What exactly makes something unlucky if you personally have not experienced it? Is it a matter of following the crowd or just acceptance of superstition?
In the poker world, different superstitions are abundant and some even sound pretty incredulous. For instance, using your left hand to handle your cards is not a recipe for success. I guess that means lefties should not ever play poker unless losing is the objective. Crossing of legs is also not recommended because in doing so you might cross out your luck in poker. Some say that wearing dirty clothes will ward off any bad luck, but to me, that will only yield more bad hygiene and quite frankly, like a second grader might say: “You stink.”
The point is that too many people fall victim to popular belief and conform to what is the social norm. However, there are times when it is better and wiser to be able to make your own call on things in life. If you want to go all in on that high stakes game of poker, go ahead. You call the shots.
